20 years ago, if you would have told me I'd be preaching the good word about the benefits of a plant based diet and detoxifying your life, I would have thought you were talking about another Ellen Olson.
When I began shifting my business into a holistic treatment space, infusing organic, plant based products, I had a few mixed reviews. Why? Because we all want that magic pill to take that will allow us to partake in those dirty little habits we love and apply those chemicals to keep us healthy and young. I was criticized for choosing healthier products and told that we NEEDED chemicals to look better. My response was, "Not at my expense."
Truth be told, there's a reason why we've got to be pushed into eating healthier, getting good sleep, reducing our stress and removing chemicals from our home and work . Because I ended up with cancer. And although I was eating healthy and working out, I was stressed beyond belief and I had spent most of my life with my bare hands exposed to nasty chemicals for a living. You know, the chemicals we put on our face so that we can beat aging?
According to a new study published by the British Journal of cancer, 1 in 2 men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Yet time and time again, my clients would tell me about the carcinogenic creams they would use on their face saying, "Yeah, I know it could give me cancer, but at least I'll look young!" Tell that to a woman who just spent 10 months of brutal, sickening cancer treatments while losing her hair, destroying body parts and insides feeling 30 years older. Your zits are not worth that "magic" potion.
For over a decade, I committed myself to good, clean nutrition after my OBGYN misdiagnosed me with depression and tried to put me on an anti-depressant. A second opinion with a naturopath revealed that it wasn't depression, it was adrenal fatigue. So I stopped running marathons, ate an organic, plant based diet and took the recommended supplements to remedy my imbalances. As a result, I lost 8 pounds, balanced my hormones, improved my sleep, cured my eczema and felt more energized than any other time in my life.
I became so obsessed with the way I felt on clean nutrients that I decided to get certified in holistic nutrition so that I could help others get out of the same rut that I had been in.
I've been exercising all of my life. My after school job was in an aerobics studio (yes, think legwarmers and spandex) where I was able to take full advantage of weight lifting and cardio classes. I continued this regimen into my adult life. If my mental state was in the toilet, I would just exercise and soon I would feel on top of the world!
You would think that this would have been enough to keep cancer from entering my world. However, stress is just as toxic as smoking cigarettes, drinking heavily and eating a poor diet. I really disliked giving spa treatments, but I still did it. I did it until it exhausted me and made me sick. I felt too terrible for fun. It took the life out of me and gave cancer the perfect breeding ground.
I spent nearly a year saving my life through conventional and integrative therapies. I spent a lot of time eliminating emotional toxins from my life. I examined everything I could about the way I was living and breathing and aligned myself in a way that I needed to. I continue to grow, heal and educate myself on how to live my best life physically and mentally.
Savage Well-being was my new baby prior to my cancer diagnosis. It means more to me now because the cancer gave me clarity and helped me shape my business. I'm not here to help you get into a size 4 or rid you of your zits. I'm here to show you how to love and accept yourself so much that YOU make better choices.
